Location: Between the Bay of Pollença and the Bay of Alcudia in north-eastern Majorca (Mallorca).

Population: 10,581.

Name: From Arabic Al-Kudia meaning roughly "On the Hill".

Fiestas: Carnival (February), Sant Pere (June), Romeria de la Victoria (July), Sant Jaume (July), and the Alcudia Fair (Fira d'Alcudia) in October. There are of course the normal Christmas and Easter celebrations and a number of other minor festivals throughout the year.

Shopping: Town centre, street market (Sunday and Tuesday morning) and Puerto de Alcudia.

Markets: Old Town Sundays and Tuesdays (mornings) close to the main square. Playa de Muro (Saturdays).

Beaches: No beaches in Alcudia town but an excellent beach in Puerto de Alcudia, Playa de Muro, Alcanada Beach, Playa San Pedro, Playa San Juan, Playa Cap des Bou, and many more in the area.

Nearby Attractions: Ruined Roman settlement of Pollentia, just outside the town walls, Parc Natural de l'Albufera, protected Natural Park to the south of the town, Museu Monogràfic, with a display of Roman artefacts, Porta de Moll gateway (picture at top of page), 13th century Gothic church of Sant Jaume (Església de Sant Jaume), 13th century sanctuary Oratori de Santa Anna, Cap des Pinar watchtower, dating from 1599, Ermita de la Victoria, hermitage with a 15th century wooden statue of Majorca's patron saint, Victoria, Puerto de Alcudia, beaches and marina.

Alcudia History: Originally a Phoenician settlement, it later became Pollentia under the Romans. Destroyed by the Vandals in 456 AD, it became the site of a Moorish fortress called Al-Kudia in the 9th century. Reconquered by Jaime I (Jaume I) in the 13th century, the first fortified town walls were built in the 14th century. Alcudia flourished as a trading centre during the 19th century and benefitted from the growth of tourism in the late 20th century.

Bars: The best choice of bars and clubs is in Puerto de Alcudia.

Alcudia Airport: Alcudia is around 60 kilometres from Palma de Mallorca Airport, airport transfers are available form such companies as Shuttle Direct and Resort Hoppa. There is also a bus service from Palma de Mallorca to Alcudia.
